Venue Hire

We welcome enquiries about hiring Katherine Mansfield House & Garden for small events. Examples of previous events include weddings, significant birthday parties, book club gatherings, photoshoots and as a film location. 

As a historic house with the majority of rooms furnished with collection items, each venue hire is a conversation between the hirer and the Katherine Mansfield House & Garden Director, taking into consideration the care of the house and collection. Venue hire fees for private events begin from $100 + GST per hour, depending on the nature and duration of the hire and include the cost of a staff member onsite to supervise.

Things to note:

• Venue hire for private indoor events generally needs to take place outside of our opening hours (which are 10am-4pm, Tuesday through Sunday). Nighttime events must be finished and packed up by 10pm as a courtesy to our neighbours. It is possible to close the house during opening hours for a private event; this would be reflected in the venue hire fee.
• The maximum capacity indoors is 30 people.
• The house has a small staff kitchen at the rear of the house with a microwave, 115L bar fridge, single-drawer dishwasher and small oven (no cooktop). This means most event catering needs to be prepared offsite and delivered for the event. If caterers wish to set up cooking facilities in the back garden, please note that the house does not have three-phase power.
• Cups and saucers, water and wine glasses, tables, and seating for up to 30 people can be provided. Due to the size of the rooms, not all 30 people can be seated in one room.
• It is not possible to remove large items of furniture from the furnished rooms.
• Wifi is available, but hirer must supply their own projector, screen and PA system if required.
• A marquee can be hired (additional to the venue hire fee) and erected on the front lawn, maximum size 6 x 8 metres.
• Access to the house is via steps and there is an internal staircase to reach the first floor. The house has one toilet. For more information about accessibility, please see the Accessibility page of our website.
