2025 Monthly Stitching Circle

ACTIVITY
  • Multiple sessions available from 9 Feb 2025 to 9 Nov 2025
  • Katherine Mansfield House & Garden, 25 Tinakori Road, Thorndon, Wellington

Bring whatever you're working on (it can be knitting, crochet, embroidery, cross stitch, mending - anything crafty!) and join us on the second Sunday of the month (February to November) for a casual session of sociable stitching hosted by the Wellington Embroiderers' Guild.

Each session runs from 2pm to 4pm, but as an informal event you are welcome to arrive late or leave early. Please note the session will be held in an upstairs room, for more information about accessibility at the house, see this page of our website.

Tea and coffee provided. Suggested donation $5; free for Friends of Katherine Mansfield House & Garden and Wellington Embroiderers' Guild members.

Katherine Mansfield House & Garden is owned and run by a charitable organisation dedicated to caring for our Category 1 Historic Place and its collection, and celebrating the life and work of Aotearoa New Zealand's most internationally famous writer. Admission fees, Friends membership, and donations of any amount are greatly appreciated. Find out more about becoming a Friend of Katherine Mansfield House & Garden here.

The Wellington Embroiderers’ Guild was founded over 50 years ago to encourage people to participate in and excel at embroidery. Despite the name ‘guild’, members do not have to be professional embroiderers, we welcome beginners right through to seasoned experts. Find out more on their website or Facebook page.

Did you know Katherine Mansfield was a keen knitter? In October 1921 she wrote to her cousin, the writer Elizabeth von Arnim, "The knitting becomes almost frenzied at times. We may be sober in our lives, but we shall be garish in our shrouds and flamboyant in our coffins if this goes on.” The next month she reported to her friend Dorothy Brett, "The Wools came today. They are quite lovely & I feel inclined to carry them about, just as they are, like fat dolls."

She was also an embroiderer! The Alexander Turnbull Library holds an embroidered book cover in their collection that Mansfield made for her sister. Like most women of her day, Mansfield was taught to sew from a young age. In her journal she recalled, "I could make the girls cry when I read Dickens in the sewing class."
